Using Quality Roofing Materials The First Time Will Save You Money In The End
When first meeting with clients, one of the main topics that I hope to discuss is “What kinds of materials will you be using on my roof?”.
I can talk for hours about the benefits and drawbacks of each choice of material from the underlayment, shingle, flashing, vent type, to the actual nails we use.
In today’s post, I wanted to discuss the importance of a quality underlay, which is often overlooked by homeowners interviewing a roofer.
At Archer Roofing, we believe in using quality materials that we would (and have) put on our own roofs.
Since we offer a 10 year warranty, we make sure to use lasting products that will withstand the extreme temperatures of Kelowna’s colder winters and the hot, humid summers.
UNDERLAY: The first step in protecting your roof from leaks is a thin membrane used under roofing tiles which provides another layer of protection, sealing the roof in.
Most companies use traditional tar paper or roofing felt, which tends to absorb water or wrinkle under the tiles.
As roofers are nailing in the shingles, this paper can tear from their weight and nail penetrations, causing small leaks in the process.
Your underlay is already compromised, yet because it’s hidden by the next layer of shingles, a homeowner will never know why their roof is leaking!
During our experience, we have found that the best material to use is a synthetic felt like DiamondDeck from CertainTeed which offers the best line of defense in a quality underlay as well as ensuring contractor safety.
It is slip resistant, with a special top surface treatment, which ensures the safety of me and my crew.
As per the manufacturer’s website, these are the following features of the underlay:
Lightweight – Easy to work with and carry
Excellent 6-month UV stability – Finish roof when you are ready
Excellent tear resistance – Durability, reduced puncture risk
Superior wet/dry traction – Work faster and safer
Cool gray surface color – More comfortable working environment
DiamondDeck is a synthetic, scrim-reinforced, water-resistant underlayment that can be used beneath shingle, shake, metal or slate roofing. It has exceptional dimensional stability compared to standard felt underlayment.
Archer Roofing only uses this quality material when we install an underlayment to maximize the life of your roof.
In addition, we only use premium roofing materials throughout your entire roof.
Our salesperson can bring a sample of this material as well as others to your home and explain why they are the best roofing materials around.
